Bats occupy a peculiar space in human imagination - from Batman's fearsome vigilante to Dracula's mythic terror. Yet philosopher Thomas Nagel's question lingers: what is it truly like to be a bat? We can observe their flight and echolocation, but their subjective experience remains fundamentally unknowable to us.

This photograph of fruit bats with their impressive 5ft wingspan (Pteropus sp.) invites that very contemplation. Suspended upside down, they appear strangely human—familiar yet utterly foreign. The inversion creates a visual paradox: they seem closer to us, yet simultaneously remind us how little we can truly comprehend their world. In this tension between recognition and mystery, Flach captures something profound about the limits of human understanding.
